Agronomic performance of quinoa selected in the Brazilian Savannah PAB
Spehar,Carlos Roberto; Santos,Roberto Lorena de Barros.
Twenty six breeding lines, selected from individual plant progenies of hybrids among varieties Amarilla de Marangani, Blanca de Junín, Chewecca, Faro 4, Improved Baer, Kancolla, Real, and Salares-Roja, had their agronomic characters evaluated, in Planaltina, DF, Brazil (15º36'S and 47º12'W), 1,000 masl, in randomized complete blocks, on a Ferralsol, previously limed and fertilized. Grain yield was positively associated with plant height, inflorescence length and diameter, and plant cycle. Genetic gain can be attained by selection based in these characters for commercial production of quinoa in tropical regions.

Agronomic performance of sugarcane families in response to water stress Bragantia
Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Soares,Rogério Augusto Bremm; Landell,Marcos Guimarães de Andrade; Campana,Mário Pércio.
Water deficit is one of the major factors limiting the production of sugarcane, especially in areas where there is a prolonged period of water deficiency, such as the West Central Brazilian region. One way to overcome this problem is to cultivate resistant or tolerant varieties. An experiment was set up at the Jalles Machado Sugar Mill, located near Goianésia, Goiás State, Brazil, to evaluate agronomic performance of several sugarcane families. A comparative analysis was carried out among the families under two irrigation regimes, one under regular environmental conditions and another under monthly irrigations during the period of water deficiency. Evaluated families consisted of 25 progenies planted in a factorial design with three replications with 20...

Alternatives for analysis of performance data and ranking of Charolais x Nellore crossbred bulls in performance tests R. Bras. Zootec.
Toral,Fábio Luiz Buranelo; Alencar,Maurício Mello de.
It was evaluated alternatives for analysis of performance records and ranking of Charolais x Zebu crossbred bulls. Data of weight at six ages and average daily weight gain in eight periods of 883 21/32 Charolais + 11/32 Nellore bulls in performance tests were used. The direct additive genetic values were predicted in single trait analysis using animal models with classificatory fixed effects of contemporary groups and age of dam at calving and age of animal at weighing as linear covariable, depending on the trait. As random effects, it was considered the direct additive genetic effect, the permanent maternal environmental and residual effects for all traits. Phenotypic values adjusted for fixed effects included in the model of each trait were also...

Anti-predator response of Haliotis tuberculata is modified after only one generation of domestication ArchiMer
Roussel, Sabine; Bisch, T; Lachambre, S; Boudry, Pierre; Gervois, Jl; Lambert, Christophe; Huchette, S; Day, R.
Domestication of Haliotis tuberculata has only recently begun. During the process, we expect that behavioural and physiological traits may evolve to become more adapted to their captive environment. These modifications may result from intentional selection of production traits or unconscious and unintentional selection due to conditions experienced in the farm environment. To study this process at the earliest stage, the progeny of 3 different broodstocks obtained from wild parents, selected farmed abalone and randomly sampled farmed abalone, were studied. After rearing for 16 mo in separate tanks, offspring from the 3 progenies were placed together in sea cages at the same density. After 3 yr, behavioural traits were studied, and the immune status after a...

Two oyster species are currently present along the French coasts : the indigenous European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), and the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas), that has been introduced from Japan since the beginning of the 70ies. The flat oyster successively suffered from two protozoan diseases during the 60ies and its production decreased from 20 000 tons/year by that time to 1 500 tons/year nowadays. Consequently, the oyster production is principally (99%) based upon the Pacific oyster species with approximately 150 000 tons/year among which 90% are grown from the natural spat. However, the hatchery production of this species is developing and was estimated to 400 to 800 millions spat in 2002. Moreover, strengthened relationships between...

Breeding Calabrian pepper lines for Brazilian agriculture from sui generis introduction of germplasm Horticultura Brasileira
Ribeiro,Claudia SC; Soares,Renato S; Gomes,Lucas M; Coelho,Lucas GF; Reifschneider,Francisco JB.
ABSTRACT Few Calabrian pepper cultivars (C. annuum and C. baccatum) are available in the Brazilian market, and among these, only BRS Mari (C. baccatum) was developed in Brazil, by Embrapa. This work aimed to report on the introduction of germplasm in a sui generis way and the initial results of Calabrian pepper breeding at Embrapa Vegetables. Original population was obtained through separation of seeds found in dehydrated Calabrian pepper flakes imported from India. The breeding method was individual selection of plants with progeny test and three generations of selection and self-pollination were advanced. Ten plants were obtained from the original seeds, which were self-pollinated and originated 87 S1 plants. Out of these, seeds of 73 S1 plants were...

Breeding objectives and economic values for traits of low input family-based beef cattle production system in the State of Rio Grande do Sul R. Bras. Zootec.
Laske,Carlos Henrique; Teixeira,Bruno Borges Machado; Dionello,Nelson José Laurino; Cardoso,Fernando Flores.
The objectives of this study were to define breeding objectives and derive economic weights for production traits in family-based beef cattle systems, assess the sensitivity of these weights to changes in market and husbandry indicators and estimate the expected genetic changes in the selection criteria proposed. Based on data from the production systems, farms revenues and expenses, obtained from interviews and meetings with producers, a bioeconomic model was derived, relating biological traits of animals with the financial result of the production system based on calf-crop, selling male calves and culling cows for finishing. Traits considered in the model as breeding goals were weaning rate, weaning weight and cow weight. The economic weights, obtained...

‘BRS MANDINHO’: THE FIRST PLATYCARPA PEACH CULTIVAR RELEASED IN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Frutic.
RASEIRA,MARIA DO CARMO BASSOLS; SCARANARI,CIRO; FRANZON,RODRIGO CEZAR; FELDBERG,NELSON PIRES; NAKASU,BONIFÁCIO HIDEYUKI.
ABSTRACT In recent years, platycarpa peaches have reached high prices due to their good acceptance in the international market. However, the great majority of the released varieties are high chill and do not adapt to Brazilian conditions except on a few microclimes of high altitudes. The cultivar BRS Mandinho is the first peach cultivar of the botanical variety platicarpa, released in Brazil and adapted to subtropical conditions. The plants are vigorous and, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the blooming occurs on the second half of July. The fruits are sweet and ripe in November with an average weight of 55.3 g.

Changes in Follicular Vascularity during the First Follicular Wave in Lactating Cows OAK
ACOSTA, Tomas J.; HAYASHI, Ken-Go; MATSUI, Motozumi; MIYAMOTO, Akio; 松井, 基純; 宮本, 明夫.
Increase in the blood supply to individual follicles appears to be associated with follicular growth rates and the ability to become the dominant follicle, while reduced thecal vascularity appears to be closely associated with follicular atresia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the real-time changes in the vascularity of the follicle wall during the first follicular wave in cycling Holstein cows. Normally cycling and lactating cows (n=5) were examined by transrectal color Doppler ultrasonography (the sensitivity for velocity: > 2 mm/sec) to determine the changes in the vasculature of the follicle wall (presence or absence of blood flow) and the diameter of follicles. A new follicular wave and ovulation were induced by GnRH injection at 48 h...
